the 21-st of december is also known as 'midwinter', a major celebration in pre-christian Northern Europe. In Scandinavian countries it's counterpart,'midsummer', is still being celebrated. (seasons are rather important in the northern hemisphere) Religions allways transform existing celebrations into their own celebrations, when they are not able to destroy them. And so the celebration of Wotan (5 december) became the celebration of a christian bishop 'Sinterklaas' in Holland. And Sinterklaas was exported to the US by Dutch immigrants where he transformed into Santa Claus. And so on, and so on.
Merry Christmas to you as well. I'm from Connecticut, USA and I am trying to learn as much as possible about Iranian culture. Please keep blogging so I can learn more from someone who actualy lives there and not from the biased US media.
